Health care data expands the scope of the online Georgia 2000 Information SystemUGA Office of Information Technology Outreach Services. October 19, 2001.The University of Georgia announces addition of health care data to the Georgia 2000 Information System, a public data resource maintained by UGA's Public Service and Outreach branch. Through Georgia 2000's free Web service, certain public information held in State databases can be analyzed and mapped at the desktop. Cooperative agreements between the University System of Georgia and two State of Georgia departments have added new statewide data on health facilities and cancer rates to the site. The Department of Community Health, Division of Health Planning, has contributed exhaustive data on health facilities - such as hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics - including location, resources, and services. This information can be used by the general public to find out what is available in any given area. The data will also support the formulation of informed public policy, for example by enabling demographic analysis of service areas, and by locating gaps in service and helping determine the most appropriate allocation of resources. The Georgia Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health, has provided cancer death rates and incidence rates by county. The addition of this data adds an important new dimension to the interactive site, as information on health statewide becomes available for combination with existing information on populations, education, manufacturing, etc. Each new layer added to Georgia 2000 multiplies the possibilities for integrated research and study manyfold. Georgia 2000 is a product of UGA's Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS). As a land- and sea-grant University, UGA has a mission to bring the benefits of its research and instruction to all Georgians. The site, which developed from an earlier project to provide information to government agencies, now serves many sectors in the public and private arenas.
