Georgia 2000 Information System adds new housing, age, and manufacturing dataUGA Office of Information Technology Outreach Services. January 22, 2002.The University of Georgia announces addition of new Census and manufacturing data to the Georgia 2000 Information System, a public online resource maintained by UGA’s Public Service and Outreach branch. The first Census 2000 data to be released, concerning population levels and race, became part of the site in 2001. This most recent data from the US Census Bureau provides demographic information on age distribution and housing throughout Georgia and adjacent states, including households, housing units, and group housing. Further data from Census 2000 will be incorporated into the site as it becomes available. Also appearing on the site are extensive updates on Georgia industry, provided by the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, including products, locations, and staff size. These updates to the interactive site ensure that the most current information on age, housing, and industry becomes available for combination with existing information on populations, education, health, etc. Through Georgia 2000’s free Web interface, a range of public information from multiple databases can be combined, analyzed, and custom-mapped at the desktop. Relational databases allow custom selection of regions, data types, and reporting scales (e.g., block group, county, ZIP code), making Georgia 2000 a powerful and versatile tool for business and economic development, service delivery, family services, and decision-making by individuals, companies, and government. And as new layers are developed for the site, the range of possibilities for integrated research and study is expanded. Georgia 2000 is a product of UGA’s Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS). As a land- and sea-grant University, UGA has a mission to bring the benefits of its research and instruction to all Georgians. The site, which developed from an earlier project to provide information to government agencies, now serves many sectors in the public and private arenas.
